‘Saturday Night at the Cozy Corner Diner’ by Louise Hurrell

We sit and slurp our slushies and wait for Mom again. She has gone off to work, leaving us sitting in silence. The diner is old with leathery booths ripped at the seams. Greasy burgers appear, stinking, and the smell of fat chokes us. The taste is horrible yet strangely comforting, so we eat some. Folks at the diner stare at us with pity or disgust. Well, apart from the smiling waitress, who gives us free food. She knows what Mom does for a living; they all do. Nobody says nothing about Mom and her men, but they know. It is getting dark and the diner will be closing soon. We crane our heads towards the door, hoping to see her.
