'Breadcrumbs' by Donna M Day

When my stepmother left me at the service station, I thought it was an accident and she would come back for me, but she never did.

At night I feed the pigeons breadcrumbs until they fly home. Pigeons always know the way.

During the day I sit outside Greggs until Gemma takes pity on me and brings me stale gingerbread.

Someone rang social services once, but I hid in an abandoned Pizza Hut oven until they’d gone.

The staff don’t mind my being here as long as I help with the cleaning.

Stale gingerbread and breadcrumbs aren’t the worst thing that can happen to a person.
