Write-In 2019: 'An Unfortunate Oversight' by M. H. Thaung

He says the biscuits are allergen-free.
She says she’s not so sure.
He says he’s upset she doesn’t trust him.
They say at the inquest it’s a pity nobody read the label on the packet.
It says: may contain nuts.
He says he can’t understand why she didn’t.

Write-In 2019: 'A paper clip walks into a bar' by Julia Calventus Coveney

He says Here’s a thought, there are more paper clips than people.

She says That is breathtaking. After all, there are more unclipped papers than there are divorced couples.

He says And even so, a single paper clip can be more malleable than any one group of people, don’t you agree?

She says Indeed, for there is no such thing as color for paper clips. He says Of course not, we are blind, remember.

She says Yes, physically we cannot see, or feel, or think. But we do exist, and so do the values we permeate.

He says Absolutely. And we are as important as the white paper we clip, or the black ink printed on that white paper.

She says Still, white paper gets stacked upon white paper and makes our job that much harder.

He says That is undeniable. And what’s more, it forces the black ink to stay under cover.

She says Although, that first page, that first paper clipped by a paper clip, speaks louder than any of the others.

He says Still, we are the ones who hold them all together.

Write-In 2019: 'It says nothing' by Sarah Mosedale

She says I love you.

He says nothing.

It says nothing to him, what she says. It says nothing - no that’s not quite true. It says I want you to say you love me. It says I want to trap you, I want you to commit to me in a way that you will regret and will cause you suffering at some unspecified future date. It says that he would be wise to keep his mouth shut at this point.

She says nothing. It says nothing to her that he says nothing, no that’s not quite true. It says that she is a strong independent woman. It says that she doesn’t need to hear him say he loves her. It says that she is a mistress of self-deception.

She says she loves him again, several days later. She says it and then she immediately turns away on some inconsequential errand. She says it like this to show him, to show him how complete she is in herself, how much she doesn’t need to hear him say it.

She says it whenever she feels like it, which is quite often; she is scrupulous never to say it with any expectation that he will reply in kind.

He says it twice in the ten years they live together. He says it once at the moment of orgasm, she discounts this because their sex life is good so his utterance can reasonably be regarded as an involuntary ejaculation.

It says something that she can never remember what the other occasion was.

It says something that she can never work out what it is that it says.
