'This is real, this is not just words' by Daniel Seifert

As we barrel in, the driver says this is the longest underwater tunnel in the country. The lights are so
jagged I need my sunglasses. Little O-shaped sign says turn on your headlights and FM radio but
the beams are lost to the overhead.

A song fills the cabin of the car. Something I don’t recognize, a singer who asks ‘Where have you
gone, where are all the ghosts’, again and again. But our radio signals snail away, as we climb down
and in. There are tides above me and it’s not right. A postcard of Fuji slowly fading on the
dashboard and there’s nothing keeping this tunnel up but paper. Little degrees of men that I don’t
know, never will.
