We gathered together on Emily’s driveway before trekking across her yard and down the sidewalks, heads on swivels, looking for houses with porch lights illuminated, the promise of sweetness within, everyone laughing and naming their favorite fun size candy so they didn’t notice when I kept walking, walking, walking, a little Wonder Woman determined to leave the villain at home and make somewhere else, anywhere else, my lair, even if I’m scared of the dark and don’t want to step out from the golden glow of this streetlight—
